FATAL CAR ACCIDENT
Kgun  9 News Tucson

Only hours after seeing in the new year, a Tucson man died in a car crash. Just after 8:30 this morning, the driver lost control of his car near Golf Links and Aviation Parkway. Police say 22-year-old Stephen Joseph Mahaffey may have been speeding when he hit the median and clipped a van. The car rolled, throwing Mahaffey. He died at the scene. Two other people in the car were taken to the hospital and should survive. Mahaffey and his passengers were heading home after ringing in the new year. Investigators still do not know if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

A 22-year-old Tucsonan, celebrating the new year with friends, was killed in a collision early Sunday morning — the first reported traffic fatality in 2006, according to an official with the Tucson Police Department.

Stephen Joseph Mahaffey was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Golf Links Road near Aviation Parkway when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the median, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a police spokes-man.

Mahaffey veered across the inside lane, clipping another eastbound vehicle, a Ford minivan, with his 1985 two-door Chevrolet Celebrity before rolling into a ditch near Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Robinson said.

The vehicle flipped, ejecting Mahaffey, Robinson said. The exact cause of death was unknown Sunday.

Mahaffey, whose last known address was in the 8100 block of East Speedway, was pronounced dead at the scene, and his passengers, one male and one female, were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The identities of the passengers and the other driver were not released.

The female driver of the minivan was not injured, Robinson said.

Mahaffey was not wearing a seat belt.

Autopsy results will reveal whether he was driving impaired, Robinson said.
